What forgiveness is not
It is not excusing the offense. Forgiveness names the wrong and then chooses to release it.
It is not a feeling. It is an act of obedience. Often we choose to forgive long before we feel like it.
It is not unlimited access. Jesus forgave, and He also set boundaries (Luke 4:28-30, John 2:24-25).
It is not one and done. Jesus said seventy-seven times (Matthew 18:21-22). When an old wound resurfaces, we forgive again.
Why forgiveness matters
"Forgive as the Lord forgave you" (Colossians 3:13). A forgiven heart becomes a forgiving heart. Unforgiveness is not neutral. It grows a "bitter root" (Hebrews 12:15) and gives the enemy a foothold (Ephesians 4:26-27).
How to forgive someone: five steps
Acknowledge the hurt and choose to forgive. Bring the pain to God honestly, then make the decision.
Pray for the person who hurt you. "Pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). Prayer changes your heart first.
Set healthy boundaries. "Guard your heart" (Proverbs 4:23). Grace and wisdom go together.
Forgive yourself and others, again and again. God's mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).
Trust the Holy Spirit to help you. What feels impossible in your strength is possible with God (Philippians 4:13).

A prayer you can pray
Heavenly Father, You see every wound I carry. Forgiveness is hard, but You forgave me first. Lord, I choose to forgive. Help me let go of resentment, bitterness, and the desire for revenge. Holy Spirit, soften my heart and teach me to set healthy boundaries while I walk in grace. And give me strength to forgive myself. As far as the east is from the west, You have removed my sin from me. In Jesus' name, amen.
