The list of spiritual gifts
Paul's central passage is 1 Corinthians 12:4-11: "There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit." The gifts fall into three broad groups.
Revelatory gifts (hearing from God): prophecy, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.
Demonstration gifts (God's power made visible): gifts of healing, faith, miracles, and discerning of spirits.
Practical gifts (Romans 12:6-8): serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy.
Spiritual gifts are not only supernatural. The person who serves quietly or gives generously is operating in a spiritual gift just as truly as the person who prophesies or prays for the sick.
Three principles for how the gifts work
1. The gifts are relational
The Holy Spirit is a person, and His power is personal. Think of the gifts less like tools in a toolbox and more like instruments in a symphony, with the Holy Spirit as the conductor. God's power is not a force you tap into. It is a Person you walk with.
2. The gifts build up the church and point to the gospel
The gifts are given "for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7), and God uses them to confirm the message of Jesus (Hebrews 2:3-4). They are never for our own status, profit, or platform (Acts 8:20-21).
3. The gifts operate by faith
The gifts always work in connection with faith. Reading how they show up in the Gospels and Acts builds faith for God to move through your life too.
How do I find my spiritual gifts?
Start with relationship, not a test. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, step out to serve and pray for people, and pay attention to where God moves. Paul tells us to "eagerly desire the greater gifts" (1 Corinthians 12:31), so it is right to ask.

A prayer you can pray
Holy Spirit, thank You that Your gifts are for me and for the people around me. I don't want to use You; I want to walk with You. Teach me to hear Your voice, give me faith to step out, and let Your gifts flow through my life to build up Your church and show people Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.
